Aqueous Series
Aqueous Series explores optical perception through hand-sculpted glass lenses embedded in frosted Plexiglas. Each optically clear lens was individually fabricated by the artist, moving from shaping hot glass to cold-working processes of grinding and polishing.
The series originated during graduate study at the Rhode Island School of Design, beginning with investigations into optical illusion created by water-filled blown glass. It later evolved into window-based installations during the artist’s early studio practice, transitioning from large-scale water-filled blown glass forms to solid optical glass elements that function as lenses. Activated by natural light and the surrounding environment, these works explore optical illusion through refraction, magnification, and distortion.
Freestanding water-filled glass installations from the series were exhibited in galleries in Rhode Island, Massachusetts, New York, and Napa, California. Further developed as window installations at the Mare Island studio, the works were shown in multiple cities throughout the San Francisco Bay Area. The series has since expanded into framed, mirror-backed works exhibited and sold through commercial galleries. In recent years, the window installation format was commissioned for the National Biotechnology Research Park public art project in Taipei, Taiwan, where it was permanently installed in 2023.
