of Capturing a Moment
Installed in the main entry lobby of the Solano County Government Center, of Capturing a Moment (2005) responds to the building’s dramatic perspective, where the entrance appears small from a distance but reveals a soaring forty-one-foot-high space upon entry.
Approximately 1,500 handmade glass globules are threaded onto a network of stainless steel cables, inspired by the delicate structure of a spider’s web. The spheres decrease in size as they ascend, creating a subtle shift of scale and emphasizing the illusion of perspective. Each globe acts as a tiny lens, capturing views of the plaza beyond the windows.
By day, the sculpture magnifies and refracts natural light, brightening the space and echoing the purity of water. By night, spotlights cast intricate shadows across the lobby walls, while the illuminated sculpture remains visible from the street. The work evokes the fleeting beauty of morning dew and invites visitors to pause and experience the shifting play of light and space.
of Capturing a Moment was my first large-scale public art suspended sculpture and remains the heaviest piece I have ever made. Its large, solid glass globules form a triangular composition, suspended from just three points — one at the top and two at the bottom corners — designed to fill the space as fully as possible. I have returned several times over the years to perform cleaning and maintenance, ensuring the globules retain their original clarity and brilliance.
